What is acne?
Acne is the most common skin condition worldwide, mainly affecting adolescents. It is an inflammatory and infectious process of pilosebaceous follicles. It normally starts just prior to puberty when levels of hormones called androgen increase, provoking an enlargement of sebaceous glands and the presence of sebum in the face, chest and back. The fundamental lesion in common acne is a blackhead, which is produced by the retention of sebum in the inner part of the pilosebaceous follicle. Acne is classified according to the kind of lesion: slight (blackheads and seborrhoea), moderate (papulo-pustules) and inflammatory or serious (nodules or cysts).
